Precedents
El Festín de los Muñecos was founded in 2005 in the city of Guadalajara with the goal of redefining and revitalizing the art of puppetry in an environment where it was virtually unknown beyond television references and its educational uses. In 2025, El Festín de los Muñecos will celebrate its 20th anniversary (with 13 editions) and has established itself as an internationally recognized event. It has helped build an audience in Guadalajara, as well as other parts of the state and country, that appreciates and engages with the art of puppetry through diverse activities and professional artistic performances.
Since 2009, the festival has been held biennially, focusing on the art of puppetry and animated forms (including puppet theater, shadows, masks, objects, and more). It was created with the mission to strengthen and promote this art form as a form of cultural enjoyment through high-quality artistic activities, alongside educational and academic initiatives such as laboratories, training workshops, masterclasses, lectures, film series, workshops, networking events, and meetings aimed at promoting local and national talent.
The festival has developed various partnerships, co-productions, and exchanges with nationally and internationally renowned artists, festivals, and institutions. These include the University of Guadalajara and the Conjunto Santander de Artes Escénicas; the Quebec Arts Council and the General Delegation of Quebec in Mexico; the Festival International Casteliers from Montréal, with whom we have carried out a cross-residency project involving artists from both countries; and UNESCO, with which we have collaborated on a 10-year professional residency project for students from France. Additionally, we have co-produced works between Canadian and Mexican artists and participated in dissemination and management activities at festivals across Europe, North America, and South America.
El Festín de los Muñecos
Since its origin, the Festín de los muñecos has carried out activities focused on all age ranges, in order to contribute to the objective of showing the thematic and aesthetic versatility of our art: The artistic programming considers formats that can be focused on children from early or middle ages (from preschool to elementary school), as well as works focused on teenagers and/or adults, with contents, aesthetics and formats that are designed for these audiences in different environments: theaters, non-conventional spaces, schools, nursing homes, community centers, neighborhoods, squares, towns and all kinds of places susceptible to receive our art.
The programming includes in its dissemination, the information containing the suggestion of ages, contents and languages, and the activities programmed in non-theatrical spaces are carefully selected and focused on these spaces according to their characteristics.
In the open spaces, our programming contemplates “family” profiles, that is to say, works that can be presented to diverse audiences of mixed ages.
El Festín de los Muñecos is an international festival focused on the art of puppetry and animated forms, which was born with the mission to strengthen this art / craft through artistic activities of the highest quality, coupled with the realization of training workshops, master classes, conferences, lectures, workshops and networking, and the promotion of local and national talent.
Among our objectives are the professionalization of the art of puppetry in all its aspects and areas, the generation of spaces for socio-cultural encounters to contribute to the reconstruction of the social unity and coexistence through art, the training and development of audiences for the performing arts, the provision of temporary jobs in the cultural sector, promoting cultural tourism in the city through a festival of international projection and promoting the internationalization of local companies.
